Frequently asked questions.

What is a Messianic Fellowship?

It is a group of Jewish and non-Jewish believers in Yeshua (the Hebrew word for Jesus), the Messiah, that gather to worship God, do His will and reach out to the Jewish community while maintaining our identity, culture and heritage.

Do I have to be Jewish to attend Light of Israel?

No. Light of Israel is a Messianic Jewish Fellowship that has both Jewish and non-Jewish people who attend our services each week. While we do reach out to the Jewish community through culturally relevant music, worship and terminology, we have found that both Jewish and non-Jewish people feel comfortable attending our services.

Do I have to know Hebrew to attend your services?

No. Our services are primarily in English but have certain elements in the Hebrew language such as prayers and liturgy. The Hebrew is always followed with the English translation so that all may have complete understanding of what is being said.

Will I feel comfortable bringing my Jewish family, neighbors and friends?

Yes. Light of Israel offers a great opportunity to bring your family, friends and neighbors to hear the message of Yeshua the Messiah. This will be done in a Jewish context with Jewish sensitivities.

How should I dress for your services?

We desire for everyone to come and be comfortable in worship. We have a variety of different people, so you will feel comfortable whether you are dressed up or more casual.

Candle Lighting

The kindling of candles at the outset of a service or celebration is cherished in Jewish tradition.  Though the candles for shabbat are typically lit 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening, we light them at the start of our services regardless of the position of the sun. Two candles are lit to represent the two major references to the shabbat in the Hebrew Scriptures. In Exodus 20:8 we are instructed to “remember the sabbath” and it reminds us of God’s creation. In Deuteronomy 5:12 we are instructed to keep the sabbath day holy and remember it was God who delivered us from bondage and slavery in Egypt.

Can I bring my shofar and flags

There are different expressions of Messianic faith depending on the setting. In our fellowship we want the worship team to be in charge of the music and we believe God is glorified through order in the service. We ask that people do not bring flags, tambourines, shofars, and other musical instruments into the sanctuary. If that is the expression of worship you desire, most of the Messianic Congregations in south Florida encourage that expression. We are a monthly fellowship, not a congregation.

Offerings

While no offering is required, we do welcome financial assistance for the proper running of the fellowship. If you would like to write a check, please make it out to Chosen People Ministries and put Light of Israel Broward in the memo line. Thank you very much.

Oneg Shabbat

After the service there will be an Oneg Shabbat. That is Hebrew for delight in the Sabbath. We will have light refreshments and waters available. This is a good time to talk with one another and develop relationships.

Thank you for coming.
